Plan a look, trace and copy activity

Set up a short activity with a solid model, light tracing and space to write on your own.

Printable sample: One word, three clearly different rows

Look uses a solid model. Trace uses light-gray lettering. Copy is a blank ruled row.

A Look–Trace–Copy sheet gives you a model to read, a row to trace and space to write on your own. Start with the word Sun and one set of three rows. Once the spacing works on paper, try another word with the same setup.

Choose one short word

Open the look, trace and copy maker and choose Use this worksheet. Type Sun with an initial capital. Starting with one word makes it easier to check the row order and size.

Give each row a job

PositionChooseExpected appearance
1Model / LookSun printed in solid ink
2TraceSun printed in light gray
3Blank / CopyGuidelines with no letters

Keep Look, Trace and Copy in that order, with one repetition. This short word then has three rows. Two repetitions repeat all three rows, giving you six.

Check size and spacing

Try A4 portrait, 15 mm margins and an 8 mm letter size for this example. Leave room above the capital S and between rows. If you use US Letter paper, select it before checking the layout.

Look at the blank Copy row as well as the printed word. Is there enough room to write? Adjust letter size and space between rows separately so you can see what each change does.

Read the guide to letter size before choosing another setting

Preview and print

  1. Read Sun in the model and tracing rows, including the capital S.
  2. Confirm that the blank row has rules but no hidden text.
  3. Check the page count and the bottom margin.
  4. Download the PDF or open Print with matching paper and actual size.
  5. Inspect one physical sample before printing more copies.

If the tracing is too pale on paper, increase Trace darkness and print another sample. If writing feels cramped, add space between rows or use fewer repetitions.

Adapt the activity while keeping it simple

Replace Sun with leaf or a fictional name to try the same pattern with different shapes. Check for tall letters, lower tails or accents, and make sure the full word fits.

Use Save project if you want to edit the sheet later. Download PDF when you want a finished page to print. Neither creates a public link with your worksheet text.
